Does Landscaping add value to your home?

Whether you’re in the market to sell your home or you’re just thinking about the future. Making improvements that will increase the value of your home is never a bad idea. Whether it’s an extension, decorating, a new driveway, or landscaping your full garden, these will all add to the wow factor when people walk into your home. Does landscaping add value to your home? Done properly, yes landscaping your garden will certainly add value. And, it will make your property stand out against others!

How much value does landscaping add to a house in the UK?

With a bit of research, it’s clear to see what will and what won’t add value. You’ll also see what will add the most value. Does landscaping add value to your home? According to a study by the Post Office, landscaping your garden or outside space will add more value than most other home improvements. In their survey, landscaping came in above a new kitchen, walk-in wardrobes, and even a conservatory. The return on the investment could be huge if you’re looking to sell your home. A lovely, well-kept garden is one of the top three features that home buyers will be looking for, so it makes sense to have it look tip-top.

Does the size of the garden affect the price of your home?

Past research shows that around three-quarters of home buyers are looking for a property with a garden or outdoor space of some description. The size of a garden and how a buyer values it is really more relevant to their wants and needs. For example, a professional couple who spend lots of time travelling or at work, might not be bothered about having an outdoor space at all. Whereas a growing family is likely to want plenty of space for their children, and maybe even their pets, to play safely. Does landscaping add value to your home?  Yes! But how much is likely to depend on the type of landscaping and your ideal buyer.

What will add the most value to my garden?

Again, this can depend on your potential buyer and the type of property you’re trying to sell. A couple looking to downsize in readiness for retirement is less likely to want a garden that’s been designed with children in mind. Similarly, a family with young children and pets is less likely to want a garden that is well-stocked with plants, water features, and different levels within the space.

When it comes to landscaping, it all depends on how much you want to spend. Features that are likely to add the most value are things such as;

  • a good quality useable shed for storage
  • a nice sized patio area to place garden furniture
  • a well-built, secure fence to keep children and pets in, and intruders out
  • a garden room – with more and more people working from home, these have become invaluable, especially if space is limited within the home
  • a luscious, green lawn with no bald patches

Quick, low-cost ways to improve the look of your garden

Does landscaping add value to your home? We know it does! But, not everyone has the budget to start on a larger project when they’re considering selling up. Here we share a few tips that are low or no-cost alternatives. These will help to brighten up your space and make it look more inviting to anyone viewing your home.

  • Cut the grass – a freshly cut lawn, with the edges trimmed, looks sharp and will give a good impression, one that will stick in a potential buyer’s mind!
  • Weed any flower beds – weeds look untidy and make the garden unloved and uncared for
  • Give any paving or decking a good clean – when it’s covered in green moss it looks like it’s been down for years. A quick jet wash or scrub with a yard brush will have it looking as good as new in no time
  • Repair any damaged fencing – missing or broken slats on a fence will cost a few quid to fix and will make your garden look so much nicer
  • Add colourful plant pots that you could take with you if and when you move – a splash of colour will make your garden pop. Place them in areas where you want to draw people’s eyes the most
  • Have your garden furniture out on the patio – an outdoor sofa or dining table with the BBQ nearby makes it look inviting
